The Unique Adhesive Challenges & Considerations for EV Battery Packs The use of structural adhesives in electric vehicle (EV) battery packs presents several unique challenges and opportunities.
Key issues include the need for adhesives to withstand high-temperature thermal runaway events, perform multiple functions such as thermal and electrical management, and facilitate end-of-life disassembly for recycling and reuse. Addressing these challenges requires innovative solutions, such as high-temperature-resistant adhesives, multifunctional materials, and reversible adhesives that can be easily de-bonded. 3M is actively developing advanced adhesive technologies to meet these demands, including thermally conductive adhesives, silicone-based tapes, and debonding solutions triggered by mechanical, electrical, or thermal mechanisms. These advancements aim to enhance the reliability, efficiency, and sustainability of EV battery packs.
